Jt. Joseph's College Old Boys Association organized the Sharad Verma Memorial English Debate competition between the boys of St. Joseph's College, Allahabad and the girls of St. Mary's Convent Inter College, Allahabad on Saturday, :18th November 2006 at 8.30 a.m. in the Old Library Hall, at St. Joseph's college, Allahabad. The topic for the students of classes 9 and 10 was "Gandhi is not irrelevant today" and for the students of classes 11 and 12 was "Politicians should have nothing to do with educational institutions". The debate was dedicated to a distinguished alumnus Sharad Verma. Hon'ble Mr. Justice Arun Tandon of Allahabad High Court was the Chief Guest.
Suraj Saxena of S.J.C. won the first prize, Afreen Saher of S.M.C. won the second prize, and Shubhanker Mohan of S.J.C. won the third prize in classes 9 and 10 category. Aman of S.J.C won the first prize, Shivani Shukla of S.M.C. won the second prize and Mohammad Asim Shaan won the third prize in the senior category. St. Joseph's College, Allahabad clinched the team trophy. Hon'ble Justice Mr. Arun Tandon gave away the prizes.
The debate was organized by Col. Gurmeet Singh, the President, OBA, Hon'ble Justice Mr. Vikram Nath, the Secretary, Sanjiv Singh, the Joint Secretary and Mr. C.K Pathak, the Treasurer of OBA. Mr. Sanjiv Singh conducted the programme and Mr. C.K. Pathak proposed the vote of thanks. The judges of the debate were Prof. (Mrs.) Rahul Mathur, Prof. (Mrs.) Ranjana Kakkar and Mr. Lalit Uniyal. The parents of Late Sharad Verma, Mr. and Mrs. S. N. Verma attended the function. Father Louis Mascarenhas, the Principal of St. Joseph's College, blessed the gathering with his presence.
