KNIT INDIA 2006 |
| |
|
In order to make us, "the finished man", our school has provided us with apples like the Universal Solidarity Movement, which is a great source of self transformation and a tool of making us good human beings from the inside. We have been attached to this organization for many years, and all that we had come across, all that we had ever learnt as a part of USM came practically in front of us in a programme organized by the founders of USM "KNIT INDIA 2006" at Bareilly.
A nine member team from St. Joseph's College, with Mr. Wilson, under the banner of Universal Solidarity Movement left for Bareilly on the 19th of April to participate in one of the best live together excursions. Bareilly, though small, is no less than a dreamland. Enormous markets, beautiful gardens, excellent schools and great amusement parks form the whole of the city.
Theland of surma(kohl) and the home place of $e famous actress Priyanka Chopra, is Bareilly. The 36th Knit India aimed at enhancing our leadership qualities, helped us realize our vision' in life, to raise voice against any social evil and to be self dependent The inspiring words of Mrs. Vandana Pandey, Fr. Varghese Kunnath and Fr. Xavier Pinto made us realize that we can change the nation only if we change ourselves, that is, by transforming ourselves. Mr. Amit Anand, a motivational speaker, was called to the venue especially to elp us inculcate those habits which would eventually help us to change ourselves and lead lhepath for others. Mr. Akram Khan originally a 6ckshaw puller, resident of Bareilly, was also there. He narrated his story where he was cheated by a tourist, who had hired him for the day and then took him to his hideout luring him with better job and better days. He was sedated and then when he regained consciousness he had a bandage near his stomach and he gradually discovered that he had been robbed off one of his kidney. He was offered money for his sale but he refused to bow down and fought for his right. He preached that trust should not be developed in a day and one should tread cautiously in life.
We heard people with personal testimonies of transformation, we sat down together to solve problems, came to know India better, made great friends to "Knit India" and all together discovered a new face of our lives. Amidst this serious affair of self discovery we shared some light moments with friends and made buddies from schools of other regions as well. We even visited the Fun City amusement and water park.
Well all this and fun and education was a part of our "Growing up" not only physically or mentally but socially. We came back from the trip on the 24th of April but with ideas which would last for whole of our lives.Team: Sumit Bhandari, Sooraj Saksena, Kuanl Joshi, Gaurav Agarwal, Sameer Agarwal , Asim Shaan , Siddhartha Bhargava and Abhay Mittal.

| SUMMER CAMPS |
|
| Nurturing the young minds & Exploring the hidden talents |
farmer plants a seedling, waters it, nurtures it and slowly and steadily the seedling emerges into a tree and then eventually into a tree. But is it all for the seedling to grow? Obviously NO ! Apart from the care of the farmer, the seedling requires sunlight, air and a proper and well aerated soil.
In a similar fashion, the students of today too need all the extra cares and activities to emerge as a whole and complete human being. Just being a "book-worm" alone is not the key towards success. Coupled with knowledge, it is a healthy and fresh mind which paves the way towards success, glory and fame. Keeping this in mind, our St. Joseph's College too organized various summer camps during the summer vacations as per tradition. Various camps includingSwimming, Football, Basketball, Cricket and Music were organized to bring forth the hidden talents of our young Josephites.
The biggest attraction of all was the "Swimming Camp" which was organized in the mornings under the leadership of Mr. Ram Kumar and Mr. V Rai. Along with swimming, our young Ronaldos and Zidanes too were spotted in the early hours of the vacations training and playing football under the guidance of Mr. Manoj Kr. Singh. Yet another summer camp was that of Cricket which was put under the guidance of Mr. Abbas Rizvi, Mr. M.S. Kazmi and Mr. Abid Ali. Basketball was another sporting event which found its way under the leadership of Mr. Kulbhaskar ably assisted by Faiz Sikander, Ankit Antony and Kunal Joshi. The melodious field of Music too did not remain aloof from this camp as Fr. Melwin D'Souza- our Headmaster taught the tender fingers to handle guitar, flute, synthesizer and many other musical instruments.
Throughout the summer vacations, these camps kept up the momentum going with various inter school sporting activities involving cricket, basketball and football not to mention the Swimming Competition which was organized at the end of the season by the Rotary Club. The entire campus echoed with the fun and frolic of the future Tendulkars, Jordans, Ronaldos, etc. The camps ended on a note of hope for the future by training the young minds in varied fields of sports and music.

| THE INDEPENDENCE DAY |
|
Independence Day has become for most of us a public holiday or a day of speeches of past glory, which tries to wake up the unresponsive masses, or when social work relives for a day, speeches of jubilation are made.
Independence Day does not demean the past glory and sacrifice but how long do we bank on it? Independence is a great term which each human needs to feel - the value of his independence, the value of his Republican government, the value of his democracy and strangely the value of his individuality. Today each potential should come out from the clutches of pessimism and let hope live. Celebrating this new spirit SJC put up a very colourful event that marked the 59th Independence Day, at our college ground.
The day began with the arrival of the chief guest Justice Vineet Saran, an ex-Josephite.The function started with a special prayer by Dr. (Mrs.) P E. D'Souza. Thereafter the Principal welcomed everybody on this Red-Letter day. Then the children showed their love and affection by greeting the chief quest with flowers. The strains of the National An them filled the air as the Chief Guest hoisted the National Flag.
An impressive march past was presented and a patriotic song by the junior choir followed. The Head Prefect, Amara in his speech urged the students to bring about a revolution. The students of the junior section expressed their jubilation in the form of tableaus and songs.
It was then that the chief guest addressed the gathering and inspired the students with his words and thanked us for presenting these wonderful patriotic feelings. After his speech the Principal presented the chief guest with a memento of the College. The Vice Head Prefect, Mohd. Asim Shaan raised the vote of thanks and expressed his gratitude to the chief guest for gracing the function.
The memory of this special day will always be there with us.

TEACHER'S DAY |
|
A teacher who can sanctify me, him/her I will revere;
A thousand times fall at his/her feet & hold him/her very dear. |
|
On entering the hall, the teachers were greeted with a tumultuous applause, flowers and scintillating song. The programme began with the lighting of the lamp by four of our senic teachers, namely, Mr. F W. Moore, Mr. B. S. Wilson, Mrs. A. Joseph and Mrs. N. Srivastava.
The teachers were then presented with a 'Wall of Innocence'. A beautiful song by Mr. P C Khan and Mr. Walter Joseph followed the lighting of the lamp, and before we realized it, we were a humming along with them. Nearly everyone was awe-struck by the singing abilities of our dea 'gurus'. As per the popular tradition, we then had the LCD presentation by the IT Club. A shot tribute to our teachers by our Head Marshal, Deepanjan Mukherjee followed the presentation Next in the pipeline was a funny skit by the students of class 11, which sent everybody into fits claughter. The main attraction of the show was the chat show 'Samosas with Someone'. The questions thrown at six of our teachers, who were the guests on the show, were tricky as well a extremely funny, we could not help but marvel at the witty and spontaneous answers by the teachers. There was also a very funny gag on the Great Indian Laughter Challenge.
The chat show was followed by brilliant songs by the college choir, and it was not Ion( before everyone joined them in singing. An interesting, and at times satirical skit, on the topic 'Reservation' succeeded the song and was well received by everyone. A brilliantly choreographer dance sequence followed the skit. The programme concluded with a beautiful closing ceremony comprising of a moving song and a fascinating candle display. But the highlight of the event wa the good discipline maintained throughout the programme with the help of the Prefects an(
Marshals.
At the end of the event, we could see the teachers beaming and smiling at the effort put it by their wards; and for the students, itpas the teachers' smile which mattered. It showed that then hard wore had been rewarded.

ART AND CRAFT EXHIBITION |
|

|
Art occupies a prominent, place especially for children in the modern world of education, Art or 'Kala' in Hindi was formally derived from the Latin word 'Ars' or 'Artem' which means to create, playing with lines and colours. The foremost important element ol painting is giving expression to human being's creative thinking.
Art helps to cultivate in the students a sense of imagination, observation, and beauty.
Keeping these aims in view, in order to bring out the hidden artistic talents which reside in every person, the Junior Section of St. Joseph's College organized an Art and Craft exhibition named 'Handwork of St. Joseph's Elves' held from 4th to 8th Oct. 2006.
The exhibition was inaugurated by Mrs. Lokesh Bharati Meena, wife of Mr. Vijay Kumar Singh Meena, Senior Superintendent of Police of Allahabad. Like every year the exhibition opened ceremoniously by cutting the ribbon and lighting the lamp by the Chief Guest, in the presence of Rev. Fr. Louis Mascarenhas, our Principal, Rev. Fr. Melwin D'Souza, our Headmaster, teachers and students of Junior Section. Thereafter the students of Junior section greeted the Chief Guest with flowers and bouquets. This was followed by the welcome speech by the Principal where he enumerated the achievements of the Chief Guest and then presented a college memento to her as a mark of respect and remembrance. After this the Chief Guest witnessed the exhibits prepared by the students, divided into three categories viz., class Prep, classes 1 and 2, classes 3 and 4 and class 5.

|
The exhibits were made out of waste material, models, charts, paper-made work, glass painting, origami, paper-collage, flowers of different kinds, clay work, wall hangings etc. The spirit and quality of display by the students was exemplary and was complimented by one and all.
There is a well said quotation by Abraham Lincoln: "If there is anything that a man can do
and do Well I say let him do it, give him a chance. " To make these words true a talent search in the form of on the spot Rangoli and Flower Arrangement competitions for children were organized.
The students were divided into A, B and C groups and the response to this was overwhelming with a
large number of participants giving expression to their artistic skills and creativity. The exhibition
was open for four days and children from different schools, parents, and staff from different
institutions witnessed the work of budding artists of SJC family.
In the end I extend a special thanks to our Principal Rev. Fr. Louis Mascarenhas. Vic
Principal Rev. Fr. Jacob Bona D'Souza, Headmaster Rev. Fr. Melwin D'Souza, members of staff, students of junior section for their full support and co-operation which enabled us to ,rganize this

The S.J.C. annual fete fo the campaign against hu r and disease was held on the 10th of February amidst a lot of fun andexcitement. The fete was inaugurated by Sr. Roshni C.J. the Principal of St. Mary's Convent Inter College, Allahabad, in the presence of our Principal Rev. Father Louis Mascarenhas, our Vice Principal Rev. Father. Jacob Bona D'Souza and our Headmaster Father Melwin D'Souza, along with the very exciting and exuberant students of the college.
The fete was a joint effort of the students and the teachers, where each and every member of the college family was actively involved. Various stalls were set up by the teachers and their wards which were all very attractive. Many stalls like the 9 pin Stall, the Pao-Bhaji Stalls, The CD Stalls, the Kebab-Puri Stalls, the Frooti Stall and a number of game stalls attracted one and all. In their bid to attract 'potential customers', many stalls had also put a number of attractive banners. The light hearted 'running commentary' of the fete was being given by Mr. S. N. A. Rizvi. The Josephites enjoyed themselves to the fullest; both in managing the stalls as well as playing various games, and the teachers were also seen relishing the mouth watering food stuffs.
But all the merriment and enjoyment apart, there was just one main aim of the Annual Fete i.e. to raise funds for a very noble cause. And this purpose was duly fulfilled with the help of the teachers and the students as record earnings were made in the fete this year.
The Annual Fete this year was actually the culmination of the Social Awareness Week which was held in the college from the 5th of February, wherein a lot of information was provided to the students about social issues and the prevalent social problems by the four houses and the Leadership Training Services (LTS) in the morning assembly.
The assembly on the first day of the week was conducted by the members of the L.T.S. who informed the pupils about one of the major social evils, Child Labour. They gave the students valuable information about this evil and .it really had a lasting effect on the young ignited minds. The second day's assembly was conducted by the boys of the Green House who enlightened the students about Emancipation of Women and told everyone about the achievements of the members of the fairer sex overcoming all odds. The third day belonged to the representatives of Blue House who elucidated on arguably the biggest problem of the world, AIDS. They told the boys about its cause, origin and prevention of this disease which is the cause of maximum number of deaths globally. The Red House was the next in the pipeline who shed light on one of the most dangerous and widespread fatal health problem of the world Cancer. They discussed about the cause and the prevention of this deadly impairment. Last but not the least; the assembly was conducted by the members of the Gold House who briefed about the result of our own carelessness-Environmental Pollution. They aptly talked about its major causes and its prevention and in a way reminding us of our own casual attitude which has led to the deterioration of our Mother Earth.
The Social Awareness Week, thus received a befitting conclusion in the form of the Annual Fete. The efforts of the four houses and the L.TS. were well applauded by all and taken quite seriously by everyone. Nearly all the students received a great deal of valuable information from the whole week and everyone's hoping to have a bigger Social Awareness Week from the next session.
