G.K. ASSOCIATION

Talent Speaks, Knowledge Counts
G.K. Association Report

In Today's world, one thing which you can always count upon to uproot obstacles and pave your way to success, is undoubtedly, knowledge. Indeed, the world is progressing and it is quite essential to match over pace with it. Knowledge, with its numerous streams is always waiting to be explored and conquered. In an attempt to make life a little easy for all Josephites striving towards this common aim, the General Knowledge Association has been working for the past few years and has continuously achieved success in its endeavour under the able guidance of the coordinators Mr. Shivaji Srivastava and Mrs. DivyaRaj.

The academic session of the year 2008-2009 had been quite successful for the GK Association. Immediately after the Investiture Ceremony, there was a competition for the membership drive, but as usual, the G.KAssociation emerged the winner. While other students ate their tiffins and enjoyed, our office-bearers were busy in increasing the members. After all this pain, our association successfully crossed the 200 mark. Kartikey Asthana, the treasurer of the association and Anant Bhatia, the vice-president had made all this possible.

Now it was time for implementing our plans. We started our scenario with the Kabir Peace Mission Quiz. Out of these 15 boys, 5 from each class 6th, 7th and 8th, were to appear for the second round.

It was noteworthy that Anupam Bajpai of class 12-A was selected from our college for a national-level GK quiz competition and secured 3rd position.

As a President, I would like to thank our chairperson Mr. Shivaji Srivastava and Mrs. D. Raj for being there as a constant source of inspiration. I would also like to thank my entire team for extending their help. And last, but not the least, I would like to thank all the Josephites who bonded with us in this journey and I hope they have benefited from it. I wish the G.K. Association a very good luck and I hope that it will continue to work towards its goal and scale even greater heights.

LITERARY ASSOCIATION

Literary Association

The Literary Association has always been a gateway to the perception of literature, the most spiritual force in life. The very fact is evident from its motto: So let your light shine.

The Literary Association, undoubtedly, has erected another milestone in the avenue, leaving behind footsteps in the sands of time. The academic session 2008-09 began with the auspicious Investiture Ceremony when the office bearers pledged to uphold the dignity and the glory of their Association. The year has been a special one for the Association as we succeeded in making over 200 members this year. This in itself speaks volumes of the success and commitment of the LA. team.

The eventful year began with a Spell-Well Competition for classes VI, VII and VIII. This time we divided the competition in two rounds. The first round was organized to award the top three spellers of each class. In the final round, the winners of the first level competed with one another for the top spot! Much emphasis was laid on this competition by the L.A. team because the study of English is futile without mastery in spellings.

The next event was the English Debate for classes IX and X. The subject of the debate was: Good manners are more important than good education.

Our students, very successfully, reflected upon the importance of good character and education in our lives. The debate provided a platform to our fellow Josephites to express their views on the topic and helped in removing their stage fright! The high standard of the debate left all awestruck.

We are thankful to Mrs. Chatterjee for it was under her able guidance and prolific stewardship that the Association managed to excel! We are grateful to our Principal, Rev. Fr. Louis Mascarenhas and all our dear teachers who provided us with the much-needed help to make this year a memorable one for us. Hats off to our members who were not merely our patrons but the very source of enthusiasm.

As said by Arthur Compton-Literature is viewed not as a mere academic product, but as one ex-pression of the many sided activities of human growth. I hope that in years to come the Literary Association would continue with its good work and generate, amongst our students, a love for the English Language.

SCIENCE ASSOCIATION
Science Club Report

'Imagination is more important than knowledge.'
- Albert Einstein

Science tends to infinity; it's not just about physics, chemistry and biology. However, science as taught today, is just reduced to a subject that has a value of 100 marks in the school examinations. The above line said by Einstein is what really science is about – IMAGINATION.

St. Joseph's College has always endeavored to impart to its pupils imaginative power and not just bookish knowledge; and the Science Association of St. Joseph's College constantly works towards this aim.

The academic session 2008-09 was a milestone for the Science Association as we reached great success in the first step of our initiative of inculcating creativity and power of imagination among josephites. A threefold increase in the membership of Science Association, with membership count reaching 290 members; made it one of the most popular associations among students.

The motto which we had this year was to 'Think beyond the limits' and this was reflected well in our totally new step of guiding students through 'Career Guidance Seminar'. This was a totally new concept devised by Science Association for helping senior students of S.J.C in deciding their field of interest and working towards their careers of interest. The Guides invited for the students were none other than the ex-josephites currently pursuing higher education in premier institutes of our country. This programme was a great success among students and also appreciated by our guests.

We further reached a new milestone this year by organizing a lecture on 'Robotics and Artificial Intelligence' which was attended by students of St. Mary's Convent, St. Anthony's Girl's Inter College' Boys High School, Maharshi Patanjali Vidya Mandir and St. Joseph's College. The Lecture was delivered by Prof. G.C. Nandi,' Dean (Student Affairs), IIIT, Allahabad. Following this, a surprise quiz on the topic 'Mechanics' was also organized with two participants from all the participating schools. Abhishek Kumar (B.H.S.), Shikhar Gupta (S.J.C.) and Ritesh Kewlani (S.J.C.), came Ist, 2nd and 3rd respectively in this quiz.

The prestigious 'Rotary Science Fest was also hosted by St. Joseph's College this year. The Science Association took this as a responsibility to encourage students to participate well in this competition and as a result more than 70 projects were displayed from S.J. C. in this competition.

Next step towards our aim was to encourage the young josephites to see science not just as subject but as means of understanding our world. To work towards this objective we organized science quizzes for classes 6th,7th and 8th. We got enthusiastic responses as more than 280 students participated in these quizzes.

On the whole the Science Association has been successful to a large extent in inculcating a spirit of imagination and innovation among the Josephites. With our Chairperson Mr. Rakesh Sharma always motivating us for greater heights we succeeded in making a distinct place among students.

As the President of Science Association, I would like to congratulate my fellow office- bearers of Science Association for their hard work. I would also like to thank Mr. Rohit Cutting and Mr. S.B.Rai for coordinating in all our activities. Also, thanks to all the fellow students who volunteered to work for the Science Association.

Now as I conclude, I would like to extend my whole hearted best wishes to the office- bearers of Science Association in the years to come; with a heartiest hope that Science Association may reach new heights in serving the student community.

Parushya
President, Science Association

UNIVERSAL SOLIDARITY MOVEMENT

Universal Solidarity Movement

The Universal solidarity movement has reached its pinnacle in the last few years under the able guidance of Mrs. P. Frederick and Mr. B.S. Wilson. We started our activities in the month of July after the election of the new office bearers for the new academic year. We all are connected with the USM for many years and doing our work but this time it was quite different as we have to show the way to others. There were many plans in front of us but without the involvement of the members it was not possible so we started selecting members for the USM with the help of some teachers. After it was done we organized a core group meeting in which the Chairpersons, office bearers and some active members were gathered and discussed on many issues and activities to be held in the year 08- 09. A General Body meeting was held in August in which all the members were invited to attend the meeting. Our Vice Principal and the Chairpersons' presence boosted our morale. The members were informed about the principles and objectives of the USM and the response was amazing by them. After a short span of time we organized the paper drive in which all the students of the college actively participated. The members of the USM also took part in a rally along with numerous other schools of Allahabad in protest against the atrocities being committed on the Christians in Orissa. When we were looking forward for the grand event of Gandhi Jayanti which was to be held in our college this year, we received a surprise visit by Fr. V. Kunnath. It was a blissful moment interacting with him though not all the members got this opportunity to meet him but the office bearers only. He asked us to give more importance to personal transformation than anything else.

Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated on 3rd October, as 2nd was declared a holiday, on a grand scale by members of the Universal Solidarity Movement in our college. The students from Bethany Convent School, Girl's High School & College, St. Anthony's Inter College and our college gathered in the Hogan Hall. Each school presented a colourful programme to mark this great event.

After the Gandhi Jayanti, we started with our USM week in which the morning assemblies on various socially relevant issues were conducted.

We are thankful to our chair persons Mr. B.S. Wilson and Mrs. P. Frederick for their support and encouragement and also Fr. Louis Mascarenhas and Fr. Isidore D'Souza for their support.

ART ASSOCIATION
Art Association

"Man expresses himself through art."
Shri Rabindra Nath Tagore

'Art' is nothing but 'dabbling with colours' in a unique way. The valuable experience of dabbling with colours has been a very important feature of our school curriculum. The art association provides a platform for the young talents of SJC to express their delight in God's work. It plays a very dominating and leading role in the extra- curricular activities in the college.

Due to great interest of students towards artistic creativity, the able guidance of Mrs. A. Joseph and co-operation of the office bearers, the membership toll reached a record of 217 members.

To bring out the artistic talent hidden in the students, we organized various events like college cartooning, poster-painting, still life drawing competition for classes 6 to 8 throughout the year at various occasions.

Just after the incorporation of the association, we began our work. The first task taken was to decorate the college bulletin board with beautiful and colorful charts.

As soon as the first term exams were over we put our utmost effort for an exceptional presentation for teacher's day. The association worked for a week and decorated the wall with colours for teacher's day and presented a memento to every teacher.

We also decorated the notice board with colourful pictures and wishes for the Birthday of our Principal who celebrated his birthday on 29th September. Then the heaviest responsibility fell on the shoulders of the Association, to prepare the stage for the presentation of the Josephest 2008. This year the theme was 'Josephest Rainbow 2008' The association members and some of our colleagues like Faizal Islam, Ankur Bhargava, Vishan Uddin and others worked day and night under the able guidance of Mrs. A. Joseph and Mrs. C. Walia and put up a wonderful show for the Josephest. We decorated the wall and performed a very colourful opening ceremony which was liked and appreciated by everyone. We also bagged the 1st prize in cartooning 2nd in face making and 2nd prize in collage. The task was not over here only, rather we prepared the stage for the Bible Fest too.

I would like to express. my sincere gratitude to Mrs. C. Walia and Mrs. A. Joseph for their continuous support and guidance in all our activities. I wish all the best to the association and I hope in the years to come, the Art Association will rot only strive to maintain its rich traditions but also will take it to greater heights.

I.T. ASSOCIATION

I.T. Association Report

"I think it's fair to say that personal computers have become the most empowering tool we've ever created. They're tools of communication, they're tools of creativity, and they can be shaped by their user."
Bill Gates.

Today in the 21st century the Information Technology has a great impact on the world. It has contributed substantially towards the growth and development of many nations and it also act as an instrument of modernization. This has led to the increase of awareness about this field among the youth. Today we are also using this technology for interacting with one another and also getting updated with whatever is happening around us.

The I.T. Club at St. Joseph's College spreads the knowledge and also inculcates a scientific spirit in the minds of the young Josephites. The IT Club also helps the students in relaxing from their stress by organizing some of the events.

The year began after the installation of the new office bearers for the Academic Session 2008-09. Like every year many events were . organized by the I. T. Club for the classes ranging. from 6th to 8th. The first among them was CREATEK for 7th and 8th. The students were given topics on the spot and they had to use their thoughts and put them to use by putting them to the canvas at the MS-Paint. The next was QUIZ for classes 9th and 10th which brought out about their knowledge related to the IT field. The Club also arranged for a movie show for classes 6th and 7th. The members enjoyed and relaxed themselves after a tight school schedule by watching the movie "OPEN SEASON".

A major role was played by the Club during the Mega Event JOSEPHEST Rainbow '08 and the Teacher's Day. The "Welcome 2 SJC", "Life @ SJC " and the presentations were appreciated a lot by everyone. The club also supported and helped other associations to carry out their functions successfully.

The I.T. Club worked hard and devoted itself to achieve its goals under the able guidance of our Chairperson Mrs. Anjani Singh, our Principal and Vice-Principal. The Office Bearers for this session were very attached to one another and worked hand in hand to take the Club towards new heights. There is still a long way to go and we hope that the tradition continues and enlightens the young minds and the club reaches the Zenith of success.

COMMERCE ASSOCIATION

Commerce Association Report

The super structure of a nation's prosperity and success is built on commerce which provides a strong financial base. Commerce finances the infrastructural activities and ensures economic development of a nation. It acts as the backbone of every country's economy.

The commerce association had been made last year mainly to guide the boys of 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th who had taken commerce. This is just the second year of our association and we have achieved _ a lot this year. Well begun is half done - this was an idea that we had in our minds at the beginning of this academic year. Every organization requires' members to function. Our association also required the support of our brothers. This was just our second year and we were quite successful as we were able to enroll more than 300 members. The first event which was organized by the 'commerce association' was a seminar. which was, organized on 23rd September 2008. Mr. Pankaj Mishra the branch manager of ICICI Bank was the chief guest. Mr. Mishra discussed the various problems of inflation and importance of commerce along with various career options; This was the first time that an association was able to bring together the entire commerce section of Class XII of SMC and SJC. The association also organized as assembly in which various consumer rights were discussed.

As an association we are improving every year. This year we were able to achieve most of our goals such as making the boys aware of the various things happening around them. In the end I would like to thank our principal, vice-principal, chair person Mr. N.B. Lawrence and all the teachers and students for their help and support.

LEADERSHIP TRAINING SERVICE

Leadership Training Service

The LTS began the year with the motto that – "the day we were born in this country, this country was born in us". And true to its principles of 'service to God' and service to country, the LTS with its various activities tried to instill the minds of the young budding potentials with patriotism and leadership qualities, inspiring their minds to lead India.

When we talk about leading India, we do not mean one has to necessarily enter a political arena, and be a member of the parliament house attending the not-so-docile parliamentary sessions to decide the fate of our country. Leading India has to be started and initiated at the very root level, in our own homes, schools, colleges and society.

We began the year with our activities on the labour's day (1st May), where we appreciated and honoured the selfless and hard work of the co-workers of our college and all the other co-workers spread throughout the world, organizing a special assembly in their respect. Then the LTS took part in the rally on the 15th of August (Independence Day), where we promoted the ideals of the world peace and national integrity. We also took part in a rally (28th September) along with the other schools in the protest against the atrocities committed on the Christian communities of Khandhamal (in Orissa). For the emancipation of women and to uproot the evil of female infanticide, we also took part in a cycle rally, along with collecting food materials, clothes and other amenities for the flood victims in Bihar.

Looking back at the year 2008, the incident on the 26th November, left quite an unpleasant effect on the minds of the Indians, with the terror attacks in Mumbai. Our sympathy is with all those terror affected families, and the families of all those . anonymous heroes from across the nation who saved Mumbai from the hands of destruction. We firmly declare that democracy cannot be turned into a playground for the dissection of the ideas of India and that we will stand shoulder-to shoulder against any force which will try to wreck the national unity of our country. We will not let toothless political ministers and ineffectual leadership turn a tough nation like India into a soft state.

In the end, we would like to thank our chair-person Dr P. Souza, who like a perpetually burning torch, has been showing us the way and helping us to achieve our aims and objectives. We would also like to thank all our sear LTS for their overwhelming support and dedication, without which we wouldn't have been able to keep our flag- "For God and country" -flying high in the sky.
