G.K. ASSOCIATION REPORT |
| |
"The remedy for weakness is not brooding over it, but thinking of the strengths. Teach men of the strengths that are already within them."
- Swami Vivekananda |
|
In a world which is driven by a materialistic temperament, the one thing which you can always count on, to uproot obstacles and to pave the way for undoubtedly, knowledge. Indeed, the world is progressing and it is quite essential to match over pace with it. Knowledge, with its numerous streams is always waiting to be explored and conquered. In an attempt to make life a little easy for all Josephites striving towards this common aim, the General Knowledge Association has been working for the past few years and has continuously achieved success in its endeavors under the able guidance of the coordinators Mr. Shivaji Srivastava and Mrs. D. Raj.
The academic session of the year 20062007 had been quite eventful and fruitful for the association. The beginning of the session was marked by the installation of the office bearers for the academic year. Immediately after the investiture ceremony all the associations got cracking and undertook the most important and uphill task- the membership drives. Skipping their interval meals, our office bearers involved themselves in increasing the membership and within no time our count had crossed 200, much to the efforts of our treasurer Shashank Singhal who made sure that the G.K membership was the maximum. This time we even managed to earn membership from the college section.
Then it was time to put our finances to use. G.k tests were held for classes 6, 7 and 8 on the 17th and 27th of October and 15th of November respectively. The prestigious KABIR PEACE MISSION quiz was also conducted on the 20th of September. Thereafter the meritorious students were awarded. A special issue of the positive today magazine was also distributed among the members of the junior classes to inspire them for the future.
Mention must be made that for the first time in the history of Josephest, "Cognesentia" (quiz) was to be held. Saurav Chaturvedi, Md. Asim Shaan and Pragya Bhatt were handpicked to represent the college. The association also
conducted the assembly in which the students were addressed regarding the importance and significance of knowledge.
As the President I would like to thank our coordinators Mr. Shivaji Srivastava and Mrs. Raj for being there as a constant source of inspiration. I would also like to thank my team for extending their support. I would like to thank our Principal Fr. Louis Mascarenhas and Vice Principal Fr. Bona for helping us with their incomparable and able guidance. I also thank all Josephites who have been instrumental in conducting the affairs of the association. In the end I would like to wish the G.K Association all the best for the years to come. I am sure that it will continue to work towards its goal and scale even greater heights.

President

| LITERARY
ASSOCIATION |
| |
Education according to Swami Vivekananda, "should aim at man making". "By man making"- he implies the formation of character, increase in the powers of mind and expansion of the intellectual capabilities. It is precisely with this aim in mind that the literary association of our college strives to develop its members' innate powers so that they become harmonious with nature.
Life would indeed be dull without literary activities. They enrich our minds and help in character building. It is such activities that provide us with wings of imagination to soar in the skies and leave an indelible mark. Such activities not only make us aware of disconnected facts of life, but also of the rhythm and symphony of life. It has been rightly observed that a man without literary activities is like a "flower without its fragrance." Thus with the aim of developing this very fragrance, the Literary
Association organized a galaxy of events throughout the year with the zeal to live up to it's motto -"So let your light shine".
After the initial rounds of enrolling the members, we started unfolding our activities. The first event organized was an Elocution Contest for classes 9 and 10 on the 15th of September, as the feel of poetry is important for developing a love for literature. Poetry is a medium for giving expression to one's passions and feelings and elocution contests help in developing a love for the rhythm of words and sounds that fore the intellect and touch the heart. The impassioned recitation by the participants enthralled one and all.
One cannot make a strong castle on shaky foundations. A sound knowledge of spellings is an essential tool to build ones language capabilities. So on 22nd September a Spell Well Competition was held for classes 6, 7 and 8. The art of oratory has a profound impact on the mind and the soul. It is the message of ones personality. To harness this art, a 'Debate' was organized on the 25th of September. For class 6 the topic was "Uniform Should be done away with in schools"; for class 7 it was "Corporal punishment is necessary for character and for class 8, the topic was "It is the quality teaching in schools that forces children to tuitions". The forceful flow of words held spellbound.
Keeping up with the pace of events, a Story Writing Competition was held for classes 11 and on the 3rd of November. Creativity this event as one story after another unfolded us its myriad hues. This was followed by writing Competition for classes 6, 7 and 8 on November and for classes 9 and 10 on 13th November. The use of language as a medium of expression was highlighted with an array of thought provoking compositions from the participants on varied topics. J.Morley has rightly observed that "there is poetry and beauty in the common lives about us, if we look at them with an imaginative and sympathetic eye", and this is endowed to us by the study of literature.
It was a fruitful year and we extend our gratitude to the Principal, Vice Principal and all our dear teachers who have been a source of inspiration for us. Without their guidance and support, we would not have been able to Our indispensable members too cannot be forgotten as without their unstinted cooperation and enthusiasm we would not have moved forward in our quest for perfection.
I conclude by quoting the lines written by Carlyle-"The true literary man is the light of the world- the world's priest guiding it, like a sacred pillar of fire, its dark pilgrimage through the waste of time"

SCIENCE
CLUB REPORT |
'We live in a Newtonian world of Einsteinian physics ruled by Frankenstein logic'
- DavidRussell

"Waiting for something to happen"
These were the words of a young
Well friends, this is whatscientist when asked, why he had been adding many chemicals in a beaker one after the other.
Well friends this is what science endeavours to study what is going to happen-to study what constitutes the unknown - to analyze the unforeseen-to present to the world the beauty it holds and yet, warn it against its own actions. Yes, we have to solve problems through science, but science that is systematic and disciplined, not science that is uncouth and rash.
Keeping the above lines in mind and continuing the legacy and hard work of our seniors, the Science Club strived hard to
achieve its goals. Under the able guidance of our Chairman, Mr. R. Sharma, we tried to inculcate scientific temper among the budding Josephites. For the same purpose, a Scince quiz contest was organized for the students of classes 6, 7 & 8. To promote the imaginative power of students, we conducted Essay writing competitions with topics related to Science Fiction.
We also encouraged our colleagues and juniors to participate in the annual "Sci-Fest" organised by the Rotary Club of Allahabad, held at Bishop Johnson School, in large numbers. We won many medals and the overall performance of our college was appreciable.Keeping up with the pace of the fast moving world, and to popularize its motives, a website of Science Club, was launched by the efforts of Abhinna Agrawal, Ankit Agrawal andAbhinav Srivastava. This website provided us with a platform to reach out to the masses.
As we stand at the end of this session, we believe that we were able to achieve most of the goals we set at the beginning of the year. We hope the tradition of the Science Club of enlightening young minds carries on for years to come and our club may touch greater heights of success.
We are thankful to our teachers and Rev.
Fr. L. Mascarenhas for their enlightened support.

| UNIVERSAL SOLIDARITY MOVEMENT |
|
The academic year 2006-07 was an eventful year for the USM. We started with the Regional Knit India held in Bareily in April 2006. The three day meet, from April 20th to
22nd was held in Bishop Conrad School, Bareily and was attended by a nine member team, led by Mr. Wilson from our college. The Knit India programme was conducted by Father Varghese Kunnath and like all others, was a step to encourage solidarity, brotherhood and leadership. It was more of a family gathering than a conference, and it was an attempt to renew our vision and enrich us by mutual sharing and fellowship. People like Mr. Akram Raza Khan, Tarun Sharma and Pushpa Gupta, who have made a difference to the society, however small, shared their experiences with us and left us greatly enriched. We learned a lot about team work and cooperation, by performing with people we didn't even know the day before. After enjoying these three days to the fullest, the team returned on the 23rd of April, with memories that they will cherish for a life time.
In the month of July we elected the new Office Bearers for the new academic year and got down to the task of enrolling members. The new members were informed about the objectives of the movement and our principles like the 10 point action plan and five way path. Our core group had set itself the objective of making the USM and its spirituality known to the maximum number of people and we succeeded in this to quite an extent. The response of the students, especially that of class VI was very encouraging.
On the 3rd of October 2006 we celebrated Gandhi Jayanti in St. Mary's Convent Inter College. The members from SJC presented a skit highlighting certain socially relevant issues while SMC students presented a Prayer dance. The gathering was presided over
by Fr. Louis mascarenhas, our Principal.
In November, we started a drive to collect clothes, stationary, toiletries, newspapers etc., as a personal project to raise funds for the activities at the national level. The response was overwhelming, as the members and even the non members showed a great deal of enthusiasm and donated generously. We are thankful to our; coordinators, Mr. B.S. Wilson and Mrs. Frederick as well as to Fr. Louis Mascarenhas their support and encouragement.
Though our goals, such as doing aw with poverty, bringing about a just society, an lessening the religious tension that appears to growing everyday, have not been realised,we have tried our best to make our dreams real.

| ART
ASSOCIATION |
All great art is the expression of man's delight in God's work, not his own |
|
| |
|
The above statement is undoubtedly true since everyone is bestowed with thecreative talent. The only thing is that each person expresses himself differently. The Art association of St. Joseph's College plays a very distinct and important role in the college. This year the oath of office solemnly taken by Mohd. Humayun, Shashwat Pandey,Vinayak Mittal, Humayun Mahfooz and Ashish Singh as the President, Vice President, Organizing Secretary, GeneralSecretary and Treasure respectively.
The spirit of childhood is a delight in itself. It is
usually marked by the enthusiastic, glittery,
colorful moments and joyous time-shared with
friends. Thus the year started with everything new and exciting. We gave beautifully colored membership cards to the students, which resulted in having a record 135 members, breaking the
previous record of 57.
The Association's main aim is to bring out the artistic talents hidden in students and present it to everyone. And this was clearly proved by seeing the beautiful and colourful charts made for the Bulletin Board by the students of classes 6 to12.
Then it was the time to organize the events for the year. Therefore, a poster painting and cartooning competition was held for the students of classes 6 to 8 on 15th September and 10th November respectively. Altogether 94 students came up for poster painting and many participated in Cartooning too. We were stupefied to see their creativity and exemplary performances; prizes were distributed for the best ones.
Then came the Association's responsibility to decorate the stage for Teachers' Day celebration. This time we presented to our teachers the "Wall of Innocence". poster in which we had taken the handprints of the children with different colours, which symbolized their innocence, great love and affection for their dear teachers. This was highly appreciated since nothing else could be a better on this wonderful occasion.
As 5th September passed, a new and exciti responsibility was awaiting the association. It opportunity to beautify the stage for the in institutional cultural extravaganza Josephest 2 Under the able guidance of our chairperson,Joseph, and with the help of Mrs C. Walia the was marvelously adorned and was look awesome. All our office bearers and some of friends put in their best effort to give it an ex appearance. All those who joined the fun praised this hard work. Our college bagged the prize in collage competition.
The Art association has always been inforefront. Its success can be attributed to the participation of its members and off course teachers- the guiding light of the Almighty.
Lastly I would like to thank Mrs A. Joseph Walia, our Principal and Vice Principal able guidance our efforts would not have borne fruit.

LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAMME |
|
One of the marks of true greatness is the ability to develop greatness in others. |
| |
|
Leadership is the ability to influence a group towards the achievement of desired goals. The majority of people this world are in are still willing to be led and to be shown path they ought to trace, but only few have qualities which mark them out from the rest and by virtue of which they lead the rest.
Leaders are born, no doubt, but training plays a vital role in developing qualities of leadership. The LTS unit at SJC helps to develop qualities such as courage, the capacity to take risks, self confidence and stamina to endure in the young minds of fellow Josephites as they are to become the future leaders of our country and society.
We started the year with the 'newspaper campaign' along with different stationary items for the poor and needy. It wasa wonderful experience going from class to class to collect the stuff, and explaining the students our motto and motive. The most important project was on 3rd December 2006, which was celebrated as 'World Disabled Day'. We went to 'Samvedna' an active NGO of our city, and assisted the inmates in organizing a special day for the children. We started our work by distributing the morning breakfast, thereafter various games filled with fun and frolic were organized. After the lunch we geared up for an interactive session with the officials of our city including the D.M. They did not fail to recognize our efforts and congratulated us for our initiative to make the children happ.
We also conducted a morning assembly in the school telling the students about our aims and objectives and hence this year LTS truly worked hard to make our motto "For God and Country" come true and thus kept its flag flying high.
