Year wise Messages:

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S HEART

We are living in an age of globalization. The process of globalization that started some two decades ago, has led to the "marketisation" of education. The consequence of the marketisation of education is the exclusion of the poor from quality education, promotion of a culture of consumerism and the neglect of the humanities and social sciences. Education has become a highly competitive, profit oriented business. The value A education has been judged mostly from the marketability of its products. The success of an educational institution has been measured by the number of distinctions, prize winners, pass results and magnificent buildings. In our present world we have divided life into so many departments; that education has little meaning, except in learning a particular technique or profession.

God has created this beautiful world so that we human beings may live in harmony and sappiness. In order to be happy and content in life we must understand the significance of life in our own context. The purpose of education is to prepare integrated men and women who are free of ear and to help them to discover true values and attain self awareness: thus heralding enduring peace in our society.

In this scenario, our college aims at the integral, personal formation of the young. To accomplish this, special efforts are made to help the students to become mature, spiritually oriented men of character, encourage them continuously to strive after excellence in every field, to value and judiciously use their freedom, be clear and firm on principles and courageous in action and be unselfish in the service of their fellow humans and thus become an agent of social change in the society. While striving for academic excellence, great care has been taken in the formation of moral character by instilling in the students a deep sense of moral, spiritual, social and cultural values ; such as hard work, truthfulness, honesty, love, compassion, generosity, tolerance and patience.

The backbone of every educational institution is its committed bunch of teachers who spark the imagination of their students and give wings to their dreams. They have the potential to break down the barriers and reach in to the souls of the students that they are responsible for.I appreciate and value the efforts made by our committed teachers to empower the students with a strong sense of self, enabling them to acquire new skills and shape a better tomorrow.

The academic year 2006-2007, has been a grace filled year with several memories of joys and sorrows. Besides the academic excellence, we have had a focus on fostering of a culture of solidarity with the poor and creating a critical consciousness. Curricular and extra-curricular activities took place as scheduled for the year with great enthusiasm. And like each year, new high water marks of excellence have been reached, both in academics and on the games field, surpassing previous school records and establishing new ones. The re-introduction of commerce stream in the college is yet another land mark in the history of our college which has given an extra opportunity to our students to go closer to their desired vocation and profession. Inter-school athletic meet (ISAM) and Club-HP inter school Foot Ball tournament were the most cherished moments of the year. SJC as a family deeply mourned the untimely death of a Josephite (Saurabh Banerjee class X) with his father who was also an ex-member of SJC family. As a mark of respect and with a deep sense of belonging, the second day of JOSEPHEST was called off. We have had yet another occasion to felicitate three of our teachers who have put in twenty five years of dedicated service in SJC. We sent out this year one hundred and eighty young men to the world well prepared to cope with their future career and life.

Finally, a child in this modern age would be exposed to various influences other than the school and home such as cinema, cable network, cyber, pop-culture etc., which are strongly impinging on the child's life. We, as parents and teachers, have a prime responsibility to help the child in making a balanced choice to withstand the out break of popular cults and ideas. One can buy every comfort of life in the market but not an integrated character. We have failed in our mission if a student leaves the portals of our institution without having grown in his respect for human life, compassion for the poor, concern for justice and commitment to build a just society.

Let us therefore continue to strive for excellence in every field as the evergreen motto of our college "SEMPER SURSUM" "Always aim high" inspires and guides us to reach the heights of excellence. May our institution become an ever more effective instrument for attaining the ideals of peace, freedom, social justice and harmony in this land. May our heavenly patron St. Joseph bless, protect and intercede for us always.

THE EDITORIAL

Dear readers,

It is my pleasure to write these few lines to you on behalf of the Editorial Board for our College Magazine 2006-2007, where you will get some glimpses of the activities and educational programmes that we have had in this academic year here at St. Joseph's College, Allahabad.

Swami Vivekananda conceived of an "education by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, intellect is expanded, and by which one can stand on one's own feet". The quality of education of a student depends on various factors like the teaching to which he is exposed, the educational facilities and environment available in the institution of his studies and his own temperament and approach to studies.

So keeping in mind the above facts St. Joseph's College, Allahabad, with its committed and dedicated staff, tries to provide the best of educational facilities, conducive environment and above all motivate the students to aim high in their lives. It is said that the heart of education is the education of the heart. Education should form such hearts that can feel the suffering humanity and respond to it through effective action.

Through a host of curricular and extra-curricular activities, our College aims at human excellence. Every care is taken to instill in the young minds values like justice, peace and brotherhood. Every Josephite strives for character formation and development of his creative skills. We strive to make learning more creative and at the same time joyful, not by restricting ourselves to the limitations of the text books but by allowing the young minds to explore and experiment. Developing a positive attitude, creating an atmosphere of reasoning and understanding, inculcating the idea of self discipline are the salient features of education process at SJC. Whoever passes through the portals of St. Joseph's College, is well equipped to stand on his own feet and to face the challenges of open economy and globalization.

Our College magazine has been one of the best means to develop the creative skills of our students and also to discover their own hidden talents through the art of writing. The Editorial Board has left no stone unturned to make this magazine reader friendly. I am deeply indebted to them and also to our students who have contributed their might for the success of this College Magazine.

BISHOP MESSAGE

With great joy and sense of satisfaction, I greet each one of you, the members of St. Joseph's College family through this message. Under the able guidance of the Principal, Rev. Fr. Louis Mascarenhas, the members of the teaching and non-teaching staff, the co-working staff and the students fo St. Joseph's College have worked hard and untiringly in all spheres, as St. Joseph's College adds one more year of academic excellence to its proud history, The Annual College Magazine this year too is yet another manifestation of the collectice effort of each one of you and expresses in itself a strong will to march ahead with courage and dedication against all odds.

We need to keep in mind that the purpose of all education is to achive a coherent picture of the universe and integrity of life. We need to acquire a 'samanvaya' of the different aspects of knoledge soical, political, cultural, moral and above all to form a mind which is able to judge independently with an approach based on reason and faith.

Every human being, the image of God, is endowed with unlimited possibilities of life, since the Creator, our God, the Giver of Life, is Wisdom Infinite. With our eyes of faith ever fixed on the Supreme Being and eyes of reason on our vistas of endeavours, I am sure, we will sore through unimaginable heights; thus fulfilling the purpose of our life and serving our fellow beings with love.

I therefore feel extremely happy to learn that the whole staff of St. Joseph's College, the "Joseph Parivar", puts its heart and soul in helping the students to go ahead in life to achieve their goal persistently. I congratulate our dear Principal, Rev, Fr. Louis Mascarenhas, Vice Principal, Rev. Fr. Jacob Bona D'Souza, Headmaster, Rev. Fr. Melwin Wilson D'Souza and the entire Staff for their tireless contribution for the growth of St. Joseph's College With its motto, "Semper Sursum" - "Aim always High". May God bless each one of you.
